Do Thank You notes still matter?

Gratitude

A thank you note, especially a handwritten card, introduces or reciprocates a moment of human kindness or consideration. Now, your peers may not know how to write thank you notes. They’ve forgotten the depth that a personal note can bring to a relationship. But not you. You’re an intuitive, attentive and compassionate person (with great handwriting) that naturally relishes the opportunity to whip out your stationary to build rapport, show appreciation or just to make someone’s day.

Memorable

When was the last time you received a handwritten thank you note? How many do you think you received last year? How much attention did you give these notes, compared with a text message, email or bulk mailer? You may even be able to tell me who it was from. Heck, you may have it pinned up in your office or on the side of the fridge.

Classy

Not too long ago, it was taboo and insulting NOT to send a thank you. Shameful. Today, there are still occasions, like weddings, where thank you notes are expected. The otherwise scarcity of thank you notes has left people feeling disappointed and apathetic about snail mail. And it’s made the receipt of a thank you a rare, special occasion, perhaps even more special than the original event that spurned the note. This mini-celebration brings you top of mind and associates you with class, sophistication and diligence.

The Feels

Thank you notes are still effective at generating all the positive feelings you hope for. As a sender it feels good to take some quiet time for sincere gratitude and reflection on our relationships with others. As a recipient, it’s nice to feel recognized and appreciated for your efforts. Feeling valued and special is rare. These feelings increase the likelihood that you’ll continue to participate and contribute to this relationship.

Relationship Building

Why not send a thank you, when it’s such a simple, low-cost way to show you care. And while your note is making your recipient feel proud of a job well done, it’s also making you look like a special, attentive and thoughtful person that others want to be around. These associations build long-lasting bridges of rapport where none previously existed. They also reinforce and expand those that are already there by encouraging a spirit of generosity and appreciation.
