Starbucks Sustainability
The largest coffee chain in the world recently announced that its goal is to eliminate single-use paper and plastic cups by 2025. The company wants every customer to either use their own mug or borrow a reusable to-go mug from their local Starbucks.

Starbucks disposable cups are certainly a key component in making the brand instantly recognizable wherever you go. But that comes at a cost as well. Michael Kobori, Starbucks chief sustainability officer, told CNN, “Our cup is ubiquitous, and we love that. But it is also this ubiquitous symbol of a throwaway society.”
To that end the company stated in its recent press release: “Our goal, by 2025, is to create a cultural movement towards reusables by giving customers easy access to a personal or Starbucks-provided reusable to-go cup for every visit, making it convenient and delightful to reuse wherever customers are enjoying their Starbucks Experience.”
While not a revolutionary idea, the scale of this initiative is bold. Personally, I’ve been walking into Starbucks with my own mug for years. They did stop allowing it early in the pandemic. But they have brought it back with renewed purpose and attention. And why wouldn’t you stop in with your own favorite coffee tumbler? It keeps your coffee hot for hours and keeps waste out of landfills. This initiative is sure to change a lot of peoples’ coffee habits.
Branded drinkware has been one of the fastest growing categories in recent years in our industry. And, this initiative will surely put a spotlight on this category by elevating its profile as a truly sustainable solution. Not to mention the fact that drinkware is always a welcomed gift that often will last for years. Simply put, this move has increased the value of branded drinkware.
