Do Good Days

Comfort

There’s something powerful about a blanket. Just ask Linus Van Pelt.

A soft fuzzy blanket can offer security. It can make an unfamiliar place feel a little cozier. A little more like home.

This is the magic of the Healing Hugs Project. Founded by Omaha student and patient advocate Claire Davenport, the organization creates handmade blankets and care items for hospitalized children and their families. Claire understands firsthand how meaningful small comforts can be during difficult medical journeys because she’s lived it herself.

Partnership

A few weeks ago, the Bergman team participated in Do Good Days Omaha by partnering with one of our clients, CSG Systems. Together, we made fleece tie blankets for children facing chronic illness and hospital stays. And, being Bergman, we all wore matching T-shirts, looking akin to a Smurf family reunion. That morning we were even joined at the office by Claire herself, donning armfuls of fleece.

By lunchtime, we had exhausted our materials and made more than a dozen blankets.

The Helper’s High

A funny thing about volunteerism and do-gooding: while your hands are busy, conversations loosen up, titles disappear, clients become teammates, and coworkers become friends. A room full of adults tying knots in brightly-colored fabric starts to feel comfortably hopeful. And while the gift blankets have a single recipient, they also spread the good vibes wide, including back to the volunteers, reminding everyone involved: you are good, you matter, and you are not alone.

Do Good Things

Organizations like Healing Hugs Project facilitate community, sharing hugs of gratitude to their volunteers and hugs of encouragement to the families navigating frightening and exhausting situations.
